Another bad experience with powder coating

So me and powder coating do not get along. I have complained about it before and some well respected people on here have come to its defense and stated it was just a poor job of applying it....Well....I still have to disagree. Granted, my latest issue is approximately 13 years old, the Kilby gas tank skid plate I installed was powder coated inside and out "to give it a long lasting, good looking, and durable finish". Well, it was good looking, so 1 out of three is good if you are playing baseball, not so much for protecting a piece of off road gear. I pulled the skid plate off to address some unsightly rust on it and above it on the LJ frame (which by the way is only painted and has faired much better). Once I got it down I pulled the gas tank out of the skid and inside was 1/4" thick flakes of rust peeling off the skid plate. I think what happens in regions that use brine/salt/calcium chloride on the roads in the winter is a small knick in the powder coat and that crap gets in there and goes unchecked. Next thing you know all the substructure is rotten and the powder coat comes off in sheets.....Unlike paint, that does not have the structural integrity that the glorified diaper has, the powder coating stays intact and keeps all that crap trapped under it and rots the metal away.....
At any rate, thanks for letting my rant.... no more powder coating for me, unless I move to a dry warm climate.....

I live where the roads are not salted and I am still not a fan of powder coating. Rattle can satin black over a coat or two of rattle can primer is all I need.

I love powder coating

I currently live in a dry, warm climate, but I also lived in Oregon (a very, very wet climate) before. Though they don't salt the roads there.

It's a lot easier to take care of things yourself this way - sand it a little, paint it a lot, and carry on with life.

Any armor that is going to take hard hits should be bare or rattle canned. My rockers, rear bumper, and entire frame are powder coated, but besides that I leave everything bare or rattle canned. I wouldn't powdercoat something that is hard to see, especially if you plan to drive in the salt.

You must store your Jeep in the winter, I went to high school in Lake Forest (not to terribly far from Evanston) and Il. salts the crap out of their roads. I bought a brand new 1983 CJ-5, last one Delph's garage had on their lot in Waukegan, one year later, rust holes above the rear wheels....calcium chloride is not joke!!!!

I drove it less than 50 miles over the course of last winter and never in the salt. I don't mind taking it out when the roads haven't been salted for a while, but it'll never see a full salt winter again.
