Are all TJ heater control switches interchangable?

I have a 97 TJ Sport with the old slider controls on the climate control panel/switch (no A/C). Is the newer style with the the turn knobs that were put in later TJ's (not sure what year they changed to new style) plug and play if I replace the original one with the newer switch, or would I need to change the connectors on the new controller for it to plug into the existing wires?

97/98 has the sliders. They're not interchangeable with 99+.

Couple folks have managed with great effort to splice wiring harnesses and graft in the newer panel.

Best bet is searching junkyards. eBay maybe.
