Just using round numbers for simplicity, if you have a 3/1 r&p and your tach is at 2000 @60 mph, if you change to 4.5/1 r&p would your tach read 3000 @60 mph? Does 50% more gear transfer directly to 50% more rpm with all other things being equal?

Works for me. 2000 / 3.07 x 4.56 = 2971

The page at http://www.grimmjeeper.com/gears.html does all the math for you. Select your transmission type, tire size, ratio, etc. and you'll find all the rpms.
