2004 Sport with a 42RLE trans. 150k miles with brand new fluid. The story is that, basically, when it gets hot it will slip from drive to neutral with basically no resistance, such that a bump in the road will knock it into neutral. On the autos the shift lever has no détente from N to D, so the actual détente is somewhere in the gearbox, right?
So, just to be clear, when it's cold and I shift to neutral and then drag it down into D there is a noticeable stop in the shifter that makes it clear to the driver they are now in D. This is the same normal catch I feel in all auto trans cars.
But when hot it just loosely goes back and forth from N to D and D to N with basically no resistance.
FWIW, I don't think it's the usual cable, because I can physically grab the gearbox shift selector arm (item 7 in the attached pic) under the car and manually feel the softness from N to D (with the wheels chocked obviously).
Any ideas?
