Banjo accessory

I’m posting here because this group has such a breadth of knowledge, I thought maybe I would get lucky.
I have my grandfathers banjo. As near as my mother can recall he got it when he was in high school. Somewhere around 1927. There is a part that came with it, I have no idea of its name or what it’s used for. I’m thinking it goes over the strings and bridge to produce a different sound. I’m searching it out on the Internet of course. But, without a name or use, it’s tough. It’s more a curiosity at this point. Anyone know? I included a picture of the banjo as well in case someone recognizes it and knows the maker or anything about it. Thank you.

That’s perfect, thank you. My mother said they would play Steam Boat Willy on the projector and he would play Down by the Old Mill Stream and the kids would sing along. A little trip down memory lane today. Thanks again. I’m tempted to string this thing up again.
