Can I use a front axle with 3.55 gears in my TJ with 4.10 gears?

Okay so, I figured out my old axle ratio which is 4.10 I picked up a Dana 30 off an XJ and the tag reads 3.55? Would it be alright throwing it on?

Yeah, the moment you put it into 4WD you’re gonna send that planetary gear to the moon.

In all seriousness you can, but you should leave the front DS disconnected until you can regear it to 4.10s.

It'll be fine, just don't put it in 4wd. You probably wont even be able to get it in 4wd if the thing is moving. On the dirt there will be lots of scrubbing but it wont explode if you aren't going 50. I don't think there's any need to pull the driveshaft unless you have no self control.

As long as u don’t want a 4 wheel drive Jeep. It will run in 2 wheel drive all day long but u will have to change that gear ratio
Dang okay so what’s the deal, the axle came off a 4.0 I6 and the TJs got a 4 banger so shouldn’t it be bigger gearing? Not straining anything? Can someone explain please

In 4wd with a different front and rear gear ratio, your tires will be spinning at different speeds. Get any form of traction and something in your drivetrain go capooey

When in 2wd, only your rear axle is under load and moving. When in 4wd, your TCase is supplying power to both axles. Not just the rear. To keep things happy in 4wd, both axles must match gear ratio.

Okay so I’ll be on the lookout for a 4.10 axle

You can have axles regeared to the size you need. Somewhat pricey, but good time to change both axles gear ratios to what ever size you need to match tire size / transmission / desired RPMs

If the axle is not in the Jeep and you pull the shafts you should be able to re-gear for $600 or less. Add $100-$200 if it's in the Jeep, but there is zero benefit to swapping axles if you can't use 4wd. That's assuming your current axle isn't bent or totally f-ed.

Well yes I was hoping in swapping to get 4wd back, I thought about taking it to a 4x4 specialist to have it done but they quoted a little less than a thousand and I was trying a cheaper route but now I know it won’t work
