Chatter / rattle coming from clutch

Hey all!

I recently got my clutch replaced because I had a good amount of chattering after longer drives 35min+ and shifting became a little stiff. I assumed it was because the clutch was going and had it replaced with the LUK heavy duty clutch kit (Part #05-901) and used the oh-so recommended National 614093 throw out bearing instead of the one that came with the kit.

Now, after the clutch replacement, my issue still persists and I could use help deciphering what might be the cause of the chattering and stiffness of the shifts after longer drives. I'm thinking it has to do with the rise in temp of the clutch system/tranny? I read that some dudes say it could be the flywheel or the throw out fork spring? What else could cause this annoying chatter?

I can hear the chatter inside my LJ coming from the shift stick/knob and I hear the clutch chatter when I roll my window down.

Any insight would be super helpful and much appreciated!

Could be input shaft bearings, shift fork issue, pilot bearing. Have you changed the fluid recently?

X2 to what Rob said. I think either way, you're going to need to take the transmission out in order to fix it. No possible way around that one unfortunately.

I saw somewhere (Utube?) There are two different types of pilot bearings. Depending on the length of the trans input shaft. They actually mount in two different ways. If the wrong bearing is installed the shaft could be unsupported. They used the "propper" bearing that the kit came with and only found the problem because the clutch was making all sorts of chatter and clunky. They found out by measuring the depth of the shaft to the bellhousing. It was only 1/4 to 3/8 inch difference between which bearing to use. They didnt even know there was 2 types of bearing. This is probably not your problem, but odd things happen on the Jeep production line.

I have a similar problem.. I had the clutch replaced about a year ago due to wear. Everything was replaced including the flywheel. It worked well until a month or so when it started to chatter upon engagement. At first it was very minor but it has gotten worse and now it shakes pretty badly. Like the OP, it seems to be worse after driving a while and everything is hot. After engagement there is no further vibration or shaking. The rear driveshaft is one year old and seems to be in good shape. The motor and transmission mounts appear to be good. The symptoms would seem to suggest oil on the clutch disk but there is no sign of oil on the bell housing or the rear of the engine oil pan.

So what do you think? Oil on the clutch disk? Something else? Is there any way to diagnose this other than by pulling the transmission?
