Is the drain from the cowl that looks like a flat funnel behind the engine really necessary? I was smelling burnt plastic and found mine laying behind motor with holes melted in it.

Mine fell off and I had wet floors until I replaced it. YMMV. I live in Oregon.

You're more likely to pull engine compartment fumes into your hvac without one
Mine is on, but it's not snapped in very well.
There's a decent size gap around the top.
