Desperate help with two pilot bearings

Okay, im about to install my pilot bearing. Buuuuut I'm confused. I've spent hours researching and can't get an answer. I pulled my pilot bearing. I'll attach a picture of where it came out of. There's a small pocket where the pilot bearing came out of. Then there's a larger cavity. The kit I bought came with two pilot bearings. One is pre pressed onto a bushing (or whatever it is, I'll attach pic). It really looks like that bushing/baring combo would press into the larger cavity, and yes the smaller cavity behind it is where I pulled my last pilot bearing from. It also looks as though I could install both if I wanted to. My manual only mentions the pilot bearing. No bushing. So what's the deal? Because I've seen videos of guys pulling their pilot bearing and having that bushing come out as well. Are there two different engine years that work differently? I'm so confused and I have a sneaking suspicion that I'm being stupid. But I really don't want to do it wrong. Thanks so much for any help.

You need the bushing and the pilot bearing. I was confused too during my first clutch job, then my auto swap reminded me - but that recessed area past where the bearing will sit is intentional and allows for the snout of the manual trans to occupy (meaning: get the bushing in first, then the bearing flush as it won't go further).

Thank you very much for the reply. So on my picture the one that is the bushing with the pre pressed bearing should just press in as one unit? And just don't install the one in the smaller portion? And is it weird, then, that there was a bearing installed in the small portion last time and no bushing? Could that have been the cause of my clutch going out im assuming?

I've been involved in a few transmission swaps (and services) now, and yes a bearing in that recess for the manual vehicle would surprise me from what I've seen. With how the manual bell housing mates I'd expect a setup with only the recessed bearing to allow for wobble as the transmission shaft isn't typically long enough to rest in that recess (normally it just noses in a small touch).

We pressed in the outer bushing first every time and then the inner pilot bearing flush with the bushing, leaving the cavity closest to the engine open.

Well that's great news. I'm relieved to have an answer. It makes sense to me that it would be that way. I was just confused because of what I removed. I'll be on my way to finish up this install then. Thanks again.

Which of the bearings fits your input shaft?are they the same? I think the older yj ax15 had a different diameter input shaft.it could be what the second bearing is for?

They both fit the shaft oddly enough. That's part of the mystery for me. Like I said, im fairly certain I could install them in conjunction. I even found one post where someone said that they pulled out two pilot bearings. No one seemed to understand. I'm assuming something like this is the reason.

To clarify, from the factory, the "pilot bearing" is actually an assembly of the pilot bearing and pilot bearing bushing adapter. Correctly installed, the bearing goes into the bushing flush to the trans side and then that gets pressed into the end of the crank to the edge of the chamfer which leaves a small space behind the bushing to get a puller onto so it can be removed. Your bushing is pressed in flush to the back of the recessed area and will be a bitch to remove. If the bearing fits, then just press that into the existing bushing and save yourself the headache of trying to remove something that will work.

I believe I understand what you are saying. And I did already remove the last pilot bearing which had no accompanying bushing anywhere in there. So I'll just be installing my bearing/bushing, which came pressed together in my clutch kit, into my Crank. Now you said something about the directionality of the bushing. When I saw videos of people pulling the bushing, it looked as though the "step side" of the bushing was facing the transmission and "tapered side" faced the engine. And that it was completely seated. Are you saying that there will actually be some space behind the bushing when installed to the edge of the chamfer? Thanks for the help. Obviously this shouldn't be that confusing.
