DIY Roof Racks?

I'm running into a problem, i need a roof rack for kayak/rooftop tent/fishing rod storage and i do not like the cheaper options like the barricade being super bulky. I also don't like how extremely expensive the garvins seem to be. I like the low profile look and the way you dont have to drill through the hardtop, just cant justify spending 1k on a roof rack. Has anyone built their own?

I installed a mid 90s Ford Explorer roof rack. cost was less than $20.00 at a junk yard. The thing I like most about this rack is that the rails are full contact with the hard top. This distributes the load evenly across the roof. I have carried in excess of 150 pounds with no issues.

I fabricated these pine plates to help avoid screw tear out and uses T nuts.
