Do I need to re-gear?

My sisters TJ has 31's and 3.07's with the 32RH, and while not quite the slug mine was with 33's and 3.07's and the 32RH, it still doesn't make enough power on inclines. Probably at least 3.55's if not 3.73's would be a lot better. That's assuming never going larger than 31's, and we all know how that goes.

Hers might actually be worse, because I could comfortably shift into 2nd gear on inclines, where hers would be reving a bit too much in 2nd.

4.10's have been the best mod I've done.

3.07 is also known as the abysmal ratio since it causes the engine to run at such low rpms that it can't develop much power. If power is acceptable for you with 31" tires I don't know that I'd regear but if you ever go to a larger size tire, definitely regear.

I've considered even just regearing to 3.73. I believe I could use the same carrier if I did that. I live in Alabama, don't really crawl at all. The lack of power even just at 31 inches bothers me. I don't think I plan on going bigger than 31. I have enough projects going without adding weight to the tires.

I have 3.07s with 31 inch tires. It is tolerable but I plan on re-gearing in the future or perhaps re-TJing :~) . I just don't use fifth gear much at all. As far as stalling......nada!

I love it when people get on here and want to fight about it and they've never driven one with the gears correct... Once you do all you will say is please give me the keys.

Mine is a 3.07 with the 4.0 and the AX15. When I went from 29" tires to 31" tires the only thing that changed (that I noticed) is uphill at 70mph on a highway, gets tough on 5th gear. I run in 4th much more on the highway.

If you're happy with that performance by all means leave it as it is. I wouldn't be but... Not to mention getting the engine rpms back up into the mid-point of the power band will often improve the mpg by stopping the engine from lugging. My mpg went up over 2 mpg when I regeared from 4.88 to 5.38, not that that's why I regeared. The mpg improvement was just more icing on the cake.

Keep in mind that while the stock gears were 3.07, they still weren't ideal even with the factory tires. It just isn't as bad with 28-29" tires. In other words, I wouldn't calculate new gearing using 28" tires and 3.07's as the ideal setup because it wasn't. Like Jerry I gained about a 10% increase in MPG after regearing from 3.07 to 4.10, but I did it for the performance, the MPG increase was just another win.

My opinion. Jeep should have started with 4.10s and only gone from there. 3.73s on an auto may be ok. Never had a Jeep with an automatic. Did have an XJ for a while that had stock gears and an auto, but never bothered to check it's gears. Was mostly for the old lady to drive. She said it was fine.
But with 4.10s that 4.0 is right where it wants to be with anything 32" or under. 33" or more and a lower gearing should be on the list.

Coming from somebody who ran 35’s with 3.73’s for years, gears should’ve been the #1 thing on the list.

The only issue I had after I re-geared mine was the thought "Damn I'm a dumbass for dealing with shitty gears so long".

OP, this is one of those things that you will never understand unless you try it yourself, and there is no way to explain it.

It's not cheap, but bang for the buck, it's actually quite reasonable. I paid $1450 or so for my re-gear, but people spend that on tires and wheels all the time, and those will eventually need to replaced, at least the tires anyway. A re-gear is a one time expense that keeps you happy forever.
