After removing the timing cover on my 01 4.0 tj I found a plastic piece inside the cover that was broken. Does anyone know what it is and can a new one be bought? It is about 3" long an inch wide and fits behind tabs on the inside timing cover.

You can try going to the local Auto Parts store, but more than likely they will need to order the part.
Many online Auto Parts suppliers have that part available.
You can check with Rock Auto, Geek Parts, Quadratec, and numerous others...
Part costs about $5-15 depending upon where you order it.
