Does this sound like worn engine bearings?

Trying to diagnose some engine sounds. I don't think I hear knocking sounds, but after placing mic under the car I can hear some other sounds, which you can hear in the attached audio clip.

Is this info coming from chat gpt? Seriously, most of those issues are either specific to a year or two, don't apply to the TJ, or apply to literally any vehicle, "when poorly maintained". I've literally never heard of a rocker arm just falling off.

I think you'll find quite the opposite is true with very little research on the interwebs...
The 4.0 is one of AMC's best-known engines. It was one of four AMC engines kept in production when Chrysler bought AMC in 1987. Chrysler engineers continued to refine the engine to reduce noise, vibration, and harshness. The last in the line of the AMC inline sixes, the 4.0 is regarded as one of the best Chrysler 4x4 off-road engines. A Motor Trend long-term test of a 1997 Cherokee XJ noted "this long-lived OHV powerplant has a reputation for getting people where they need to go" as well as "much love expressed by owners for the torquey 4.0-liter/190-horsepower inline six." The engine is known for longevity, and can sometimes go more than 300,000 miles (482,803 km) without rebuilding. Also, the vibration dampener (harmonic balancer) usually gives out after 300,000 miles where it is common for the rubber insulation to deteriorate where a service replacement is warranted. Described "as reliable as a block of wood" by Popular Mechanics and ranked first among "the ten best car engines they stopped making in the past 20 years," the 4.0 L should run 200,000 miles before a rebuild is even expected and it is also able to "suffer running conditions that'd kill most motors."


Here's a list of some known issues:

  1. Exhaust Manifold Cracks: The exhaust manifold is known to develop cracks over time, which can lead to exhaust leaks.
  2. Oil Leaks: Common areas include the rear main seal, valve cover gasket, and oil pan gasket.
  3. Cooling System Issues: Overheating can sometimes be a problem, often due to a failing water pump, thermostat, or radiator issues.
  4. Piston Skirt Cracking: Some early models had pistons that were prone to cracking, although this was more of an issue in the 1990s.
  5. Distributor Sync Sensor: This can fail and cause a no-start or poor-running condition.

I'm fairly new to Jeep TJ's, but here's a quick review of your list of 4.0L engine issues and defects...
  1. Heard of this happening on occasion, probably not a big deal if it does, certainly won't require an engine rebuild.
  2. All can be fixed with relative ease. Assuming you have a leak already (which would be obvious) keep the correct type and quantity of oil in it and you should be find until you can perform the repair. Won't require and engine rebuild and lots of cars leak oil, just go to any parking lot for evidence of this.
  3. True of all vehicles with cooling systems. If you're over 100k and still on factory parts, might be about time for a refresh. Not a difficult job, I did mine in a parking space where I live in a weekend...and that was everything new except the heater core. Full drain and flush, including a new radiator. I didn't bother with Thermocure. If you drain and let it sit overnight, you will see flash rust in the water journals, not a big deal...it's a cast iron block.
  4. Know nothing of this one, can't speak to it but this is the first time I've heard of it specific to the 4.0
  5. It's a sensor and probably fairly easy to replace. I suspect you'll know it when it happens and shouldn't require an engine rebuild. Replace the sensor, back in business.
  6. True of all vehicles with O2 sensors and fuel injection (safe to say "most vehicles"), nothing lasts forever and I believe a fairly straight forward repair. As an aside, if you purchased your Jeep for fuel efficiency, you purchased the wrong vehicle. Sell it and buy a Prius or Tesla. Seriously.
  7. See #4 above. Might be a thing but I am unaware of it through the research I did before buying my LJ back in May. That said, rocker arms don't really just "fall off".

  9. As many have stated, this is a known issue with early TJ's. Easy check to see if yours is at an increased risk of cracking. Check before getting excited about a potential non-issue.
  10. They have rubber in them, rubber deteriorates over time. Not specific to Jeeps and not a big deal to replace. Certainly will not require an engine rebuild.
Relax, the sky is not falling...yet. Aside from AWOL rocker arms and cracked heads, any of the above can be fixed in a parking space with basic hand tools, decent replacement parts, some time and possibly some cursing.

You are suggesting bias, that might occur on some boards but I wouldn't bet on it here. Safe to say everyone here loves their TJ's, but I can assure you that if there's a problem with the 4.0 in the TJ, you WILL find information on it here. There are a lot of folks here who've owned many Jeeps over many years and have a lot of experience with just about every possible issue and the associated repairs. Use the search function and read/listen to what people are posting. While there are some questionable posts here and there, some of these muddy, crusty, dusty and rusty bums know WTF they're talking about.

If you use a high-performance oil filter and MSD coil, you will never have a problem. The motor will last to 800k miles.
