Trying to diagnose some engine sounds. I don't think I hear knocking sounds, but after placing mic under the car I can hear some other sounds, which you can hear in the attached audio clip.

I plan to drop the pan soon, inspect the timing chain slop, inspect the bearings and take plastigauge readings. Any idea what might be causing these sounds? Does it sound like worn bearings?

Mine is sounding similar. I don’t know what it is, doesn’t sound like lifters or a rod. Just sounds like a tractor.

Unfortunately, I fear that these sounds may be serious. But I will admit that I do not know what a brand new factory 4.0 off the assembly line sounds like. I do know that my engine does not sound like a smooth running engine.

One theory I have is that these sounds are related to the main bearings. I've heard that a rear main seal leak may be the result of worn main bearings. I've read that Jeep 4.0 engines can be delicate and prone to total engine failure, so I do want to get ahead of the replacement of these suspected worn bearings before a full machine-shopped engine rebuild is required.

My engine audio recording contains the following sounds:
  • High speed tapping sound, jackhammer-esque — could be failed rod bearings
  • Low frequency thudding sound — could be cracked exhaust
  • Oscillating/chugging sound — could be spark plug/fuel delivery related
  • General metal on metal scraping sounds — could be worn main bearings
  • Faint, intermittent rattling sound — could be failed piston components, such as broken skirt
Does anyone know what a Jeep 4.0 is supposed to sound like new?

Honestly I can't hear anything abnormal and I played it twice. How many miles are on the engine? Is that cold or warm? I've heard of some piston slap on high mileage 4.0s, piston slap will be louder when cold since pistons expand when they warm up.

I have around 110k. From what I read, this is around when the 4.0 starts to break down and fail--catastrophically if not remediated before bearing/piston failure. This recording was not completely cold but not warmed up either. I have another recording when warmed up but it doesn't sound much different.
 
LMAO. I have 300K on a 4.0 in a Yj and 265K on the TJ. Where the hell are you getting this "info"?

I recognize that it doesn't have this reputation on this forum, but it comes up in my searches on other forums. Here is a quote that calls out a specific, common defect in the 4.0:

Thousands and thousands of 4.0Ls from late '99 until '02 had the bad 0331 head
 
Yep, those early 0331 heads are prone to cracking right under the oil cap if the engine is ever run hot. Some of them never crack, however.

05s and 06s have a crap OPDA that needs to be replaced by an aftermarket one due to a bad design.

There's probably some other quirks in certain years that I can't think of.

None of that equates to 4.0s in general failing catastrophically at 100K mi.

Remove the oil cap and look straight down at your head. If you see TUPY, it's the newer upgraded head, if not, it's the crack prone one.

You're lucky it lasted to 110k! You really ought to fully rebuild that ticking time bomb before it goes 💥

All the claims you’ve made about general reliability and longevity are very unusual. The 4.0 is certainly not “delicate and prone to engine failure.”

Really not sure where this info is coming from but it’s not accurate. I listened to the video and it sounds maybe a bit different pitch but it’s a video and doesn’t capture very well. I doubt there is a problem. And I highly doubt you’ll ever find a brand new 4.0 to compare to. Why would it need to be brand new anyways? You just need to hear from another engine or two to know if yours is normal or not. They don’t need to be new, they just need to be working in good shape.

he's talking about, you know the head bearings that we replace every 80k miles ! the one's that go bad and start knocking then drive the pistons out of the oil pan. just wait until he finds out at 150k miles the peterfor goes out and you have to pull the tub off the frame to change it.
 
TJX02 my advice is to send in an oil sample to check for excessive wear metals or anti freeze contamination. If the head is cracked there will be high potassium in the oil along with accelerated wear from the contamination. Unless it is driven with anti freeze in the oil for a long time it is still save-able with a new head. I can tell you that from personal experience on my 2000. If there is no contamination just drive it and keep tabs on it.

If you research almost any older model vehicle you will come up with a list like that. I saw one about my dead reliable 7.3 Powerstroke that was laughable. You have to keep in mind that for every complaint about a vehicle there are probably hundreds or even thousands more that didn't have that problem so you didn't hear about them, people tend to show up on forums and make complaints or ask for help when they have problems, many more don't because they don't have problems and they're not always going to join a forum just to say they aren't having problems (well, except some of us:D). Of course when the model gets really old like our TJs you get forums of people like us who aren't really having too many problems, so we spend lots of money and time collecting and adding stuff that will break and cause us problems.
 
Is this info coming from chat gpt? Seriously, most of those issues are either specific to a year or two, don't apply to the TJ, or apply to literally any vehicle, "when poorly maintained". I've literally never heard of a rocker arm just falling off.

My 99 sounded worse than that by a long shot and never gave me any problems.
