New to the forum and first time posting. I’ve read the no-crank troubleshooting post, but as you’ll see later the vehicle has some weird symptoms beyond just not cranking. Not sure if it is a short somewhere, actuator pin in the key switch, PCM suddenly gone bad, etc.
I have an 04 LJ 4.0 and recently had the front U-Joint and serpentine replaced. After I got the vehicle back the serpentine was still making noise and actually came off after a couple of days. Took the vehicle back and they determined the rubber layers in the balancer were bad so they replaced that and installed a new serpentine. After getting it back the second time, I went to start the vehicle the next day and it wouldn't crank. It tried one time and stopped. The dash gauges and lights illuminated but only heard clicking sounds behind the dashboard. Assuming I may have drained the battery when it didn't have the serpentine on in order to move it for the tow truck, (and the fact that the battery is at least 8 years old), I checked it and it was showing only 11.0 volts. I assumed it was discharged and replaced it and still no crank.
This time I noticed that with the key OUT of the ignition I can tap/hit the top of the dash or shut the door and the clicking sound begins behind the dash and the hazard lights actually flash for about 20 seconds. (Checked to see that the hazards were not turned on and they weren’t). I checked all the fuses and swapped some relays to see if I could figure it out and couldn’t. Called the mechanic I use and he came to my house to look at it, but he said he'd have to get it back in the shop to look it over.
The vehicle is older and I know coincidences happen but trying to figure out why this issue is happening right after the last repair when previous to this the Jeep ran great. The other thing I would mention is that the previous owner installed an aftermarket alarm. I have never used it and when this issue started the small LED alarm bulb they installed on the dash above the aircon vents started illuminating. It has never illuminated before today in the 3 years I’ve owned the vehicle.
