So after driving the jeep with 33's and 3.07's for a year I finally re-geared a couple weeks ago. There is no doubt that you can run 33's with 3.07's but it was a dog. On the roads around town I would seldom even use 4th gear, on the highway I still never touched 5th (unless downhill with a tail wind), even the slightest grade and I'd have to down shift to 3rd by the time I got close to the top, just frig'n sucked. Off road I would find myself using 4 low just to get a half decent crawl speed, depending on the terrain I would sometimes be in 3rd gear in 4 low.
Drove the jeep on the road for the past 2 weeks after re-gearing to 4.88's, was starting to think I may have went a little too deep with the gears. In those 2 weeks I took it easy and now have over 500km's so I figure they are now broken in. Went out yesterday with a couple friends and found some good trails,,,,,,,,I F'N LOVE THE 4.88's
Going uphill on rough fire roads with rocks the size of your fist I would normally use 4 low (again just for the crawl speed), yesterday, 2wd, just climbed slow and steady, no spinning, no excessive bouncing, no riding the clutch. We found a muddy, rutted up trail towards the end of the day, 4low and I literally just idled through it, no spin, no clutch.
The friend I was with has a JK with 33's and 3.53's (I think, if not something close), she was on the clutch, stalled a number of times, had to use way more RPM's, and even re-marked and the end of the mud that I had a way easier time in that than she did. She was debating on weather or not to buy a trailer (so she can put a roof top tent on it and have extra storage) or re-gear, I told her to re-gear, you can always sleep in a tent on the ground
Most here know the benefit of re-gearing, for those on the fence,,,,,,do it! Best thing I did for drive-ability.
