Gas tanks falling

Hello, I have a '99 TJ and I have a lot of rust underneath but it's still rolling along just fine and for us, it's almost always a jeep for the trail, and the woods. The skid plate under the gas tank was so rusted that it was falling off and finally, I tore the rest of it off manually. Now a few weeks later the gas tank itself has dropped down a few inches. My question is how important, or necessary is the skid plate? I found metal gas tank support straps specifically made for Jeep TJ on Amazon...will these do the job? Thanks for your help.

Well since the tank is strapped (the ones on Amazon) into the tank skid before it's mounted I would suggest that it should be repaired asap. It is the means of support for the tank.
