Grease zerks not taking grease

[old jeep new to me]

Trying to grease sway bar links with brand new zerks and the grease just comes out the sides. I took one off and tried to shoot through it and still not going through. I pushed on the little ball and it moves in yet very stiff. I also had another new one in my garage which had the same results. Does the grease gun have something inside the tip that is supposed to push in the little ball or is it just from the pressure of the grease?

I don't think so,pretty sure it just clips onto zerk ball fitting and pressure from grease coming out of gun pushes in check ball allowing grease to enter fitting. I'll see if I can find gun and take a look though.

It is indeed just pressure that pushes the spring loaded ball bearing down so it can accept grease.

Funny. Turned around and there it was hanging right behind me. Yeah looks like it works as I thought. So if yours looks like this your gun is good.

It is a ball check that is designed to open under pressure from the grease gun. I would try a replacement hose with a new connector.

Yeah it is an old mini grease gun and probably no good any more, I have been wanting to get a new bigger one with a flex hose anyway.

The tip of my grease gun hose turns and sometimes doesn’t fit tightly on the zerks and has the same results with coming out the sides. See if you grease gun tip is adjustable and try turning it to see it if goes on better.

The little ball in the zerk could be stuck. Take a little nail (or something like one) and try pushing the ball in.

Did that, it pushed in but was very stiff.

the end of the old grease gun i had previously used had a threaded fitting end on the assembly that presses onto the zerk fitting that would tighten or loosen, when the fitting was loose it would go on easily but squirt out the sides and when i tightened it onto the zerk, the zerk would accept the grease but it was difficult to pull the fitting off the zerk without loosening it.

i use a quick connect fitting on the end of the grease gun now, much easier and less fussing around.

Not sure if I have seen one of the before, I have had this little gun for probably 25 years and it just has a straight hard tube with the fitting that just kind of snaps on, it does take a pretty hard pull to get it off. I have never really liked it because it is also pretty tricky to get the grease loaded in it and work properly.

That's a better way of saying what I was trying to say. LOL

I'd get new zerks. They sell boxes of them in different threads and angles heads. They are no longer the same quality as the ones made here. They all come from China now. Like all winches. I've had to replace many of them the first time I try to use them. Get the kit.( actually 2 kits. 1 SAE and one metric) Replace them as soon as a problem arises. Cheap and easy. Not worth the frustration of having one that squirts the grease out the side or wont hold the grease in or just won't couple correctly. Life is too short.
