Has anyone run 5.89 gears?

Just learned that there are 5.89 gears available for the TJ Rubicon axles.

Has anyone run them with the 42RLE trans and 35s? Were highway RPMs and driveshafts speeds an issue?

Don't 5.89s require different lockers than OEM?

They are not for rubicon lockers, you’ll need normal Dana 44 lockers/carriers for 5.89 to work right.

No lockers at the moment. I would be running ARB lockers most likely.

ARB rd116 for a Dana 44. Nothing specifically Rubicon is capable of accepting 5.89.

If it can be trusted, then:

5.89
53 ring gear teeth
9 pinion gear teeth

5.38
43 ring gear teeth
8 pinion gear teeth


An increase of 10 ring gear teeth sounds like an awful lot to me. Wonder how small those teeth would be..

I'm running 5.38 in an currie 44 front, currie 60 rear. Just because you can go lower, doesn't mean you should.

Standard cut gears, which is why the factory Rubicon lockers don't allow for it.

If I didn't need two new lockers to run them, I would seriously consider them for my regear.
