HVAC Control Question

Morning everyone,

Recently bought an 05 TJ Rocky Mountain Edition with A/C. Now that it's getting colder I am starting to use the heater and was wondering if I am able to do upper and lower air without having to run the A/C. The knob shows this option with the snowflake which tells me one of two things:

1. Anytime you are using this option you are running A/C (even if heating)
2. Whenever running cold air you must use one of the options with a snowflake

Can anyone point me in the right direction? I don't want to put excess wear and tear on the air conditioner. I know most vehicles run A/C when defrosting but what about the others?

you're correct - they didn't give us the option to run upper and lower without AC. I've read about a mod to change this by moving the AC compressor enable to a separate button or switch, but haven't looked further into it.

pretty much. I hate hot air blowing in my face so I don't miss the feature enough to worry about it. But it's not the end of the world to run your compressor every now and then so it's not sitting unused all winter.

I noticed the same thing on my new to me 2004 but also notice that some warm air still comes out of the upper vents. Small amount but with the small cab area the front seat area heats up quickly. I have another question about when the system is in "snowflake" that I will post in a separate message.

I have zero problem with you asking another question in the same thread, specially if it's related. Not sure if that violates forum rules but I'm cool with it!

Just like both choices for defrost, when it's cold out you will be running the A/C with the center knob in the red zone.

I understand why the defrost uses A/C but it's just weird that Chrysler wasn't trying to make the EPA happy by saving me a teaspoon of gas when I want heat blowing on my feet and out of the vents at the same time.
