Jeep dealership cannot fix it

Speaking of chafed wires, because I cant recall, is his subject to the harness getting chafed/shorted where it rubs on the back of the cylinder head?

The problem with taking a TJ (or anything older) to a dealer is that there is a really really good chance that the people touching it were not even born when it rolled off the assembly line.

Anything they learned at trade school or on the job at the dealer might get them by. But anything pre birth to them is just witchcraft with how it works.

Does this mean all the mechs older than 24 have passed or retired? Oh no😳🤣

Of course not, but its been my view a dealer is a starting ground for fresh meat to get a foot in the door. Once they learn they either say screw working on vehicles, open their own business, or work for a more profitable shop with some level of ethics and morals.

This was a common occurrence until around '04 where the factory installed a plastic housing that the wire loom is routed thru to protect against the split wire loom and wiring from rubbing against the threaded head stud.
On my '01 I closely inspected mine and slid an old sparkplug boot over the threaded head stud to protect from this problem occurring.

The common spots are there and between the firewall and trans with that pinch seam being right there. Of course it could be elsewhere too, but those are definitely common locations.

Fortunately, it's pretty easy to trace the whole wiring harness.

Unfortunately, around 03 or so they switched to a loom that disintegrates after a bit when exposed to underhood heat. Worse in 05-06.

Okay, so here is my story. I hope someone will read this and help me determine the problem. I can’t believe this hasn’t happened before, but a week at the dealership and they have given up. This is my 17 year old son’s Jeep. It’s a 2002 Jeep Wrangler X with a straight 6 and manual 5 speed transmission. While he drives it it will just die on him randomly. They said it was showing a throttle body sensor code so they replaced that, and 400.00 later it still dies. They jiggled wires, and unplugged injector cables but to no avail. It doesn’t sputter or run rough before it dies. It’s like someone literally turned the key off. Sometimes It won’t start again either until it has sat for a while. Sometimes it will start right back up. Has this ever happened to anybody else, and what was the cause? Help!

I have zero confidence in dealer shops across the board.

I noticed the same thing. The loom on my 97 is still good. If you even breathe on the looming on my 05 or brothers 06 it just turns to dust. Anything to save a penny I guess.

I'll bet you it isn't cheaper and instead is part of some more expensive green push to use less nasty oil derivatives in the manufacture.

This is just from under the front edge of the firewall back to the gas tank. We didn't break it up into small pieces, that is how it was on the wire harnesses.

On my 06 it's a mixture of pieces around the transmission and then other parts it's still good.

Transmission loom was just crumbling when touched,

adding my experience of a random crank no start issue with the 4.0....

Driving home one day and I lose all engine power, look down and RPMs are at a fat 0,

Coasted to the side of the road and started poking around. Battery, Check. Starter, Check. Cranks? Yes. Starts? No.

Remembered hearing about the CPS being pissy sometimes. wiggled the wires and splashed the sensor with water. Fires right up.

Ended up being chaffed wires running down the block to the CPS.
