Jeep is sputtering and backfiring

Oh I just remembered another thing. I replaced the TPS on the intake manifold once. But it’s because the Jeep threw a code. Another time was the CPS. But that was also because of a code.

Well... my jeep just threw a brand new code at me after it backfired and died about 2 miles into the test drive. Anyone know what would cause a P0108 code?
"P0108 - Manifold Absolute Pressure/Barometric Pressure Circuit High"

I would look at possibly replacing the map sensor. I believe it's on the out board side of the throttle body near the fender.. maybe a large vacuum leak.. I've heard of having a leak in the air conditioning vacuum tank under the battery area. Not sure.. Food for thought

I have a 1997 2.5l Jeep TJ that has recently begun to give me problems. It started 2 months ago as an occasional sputter but later started backfiring as well. Initially, the backfiring sounded like popcorn popping and was muffled. At first, I could get it to stop while driving by throwing it into neutral and then back to drive but that worked for a short period of time. As the problem got worse I had to pull over and turn the key off and on a few times and the problem would go away for a while. So... it started getting worse and eventually it backfired extremely loud one time and died while going 60 mph. I could not get it to start and had to have it towed. I've read multiple threads by owners with a similar problem and I started fixing things based on recommendations I read but nothing has worked. So far, I have installed a new fuel pump, fuel filter, O2 sensors, ignition coil, crankshaft sensor, distributor, spark plugs & wire set. The most recent fix attempt was the distributor and that was done by my mechanic. When the installation was complete I picked it up and it drove perfect for about 15 miles and then it sputtered, backfired and died. After about 10 minutes it started and I was able to make it back to the mechanic without another incident. Two days later the mechanic called and said it was ready, again. He said he checked back over everything that was done to it and cleaned the injectors. It ran great for about a week and now it's doing the same thing except it's not dying, just sputtering and backfiring and then its fine. Honestly, I'd take it back to the mechanic but at this point, I feel I am just throwing away money because nothing has worked. I've done everything that I know to do so any new suggestions would really help!
Mine is doing same thing . did you find the problem?

Bump! My 1997 is doing the exact same thing. Backfires every time I accelerate and engine died while I was driving it a few times. What should I ask a mechanic to look into?

My jeep also does this but it seems to worse for the first 5 minutes or so of driving until it is warmed up I guess. It's definitely worse when just starting up. In that first acceleration onto the street, if I give it a lot of gas, it stumbles and I have to back off on the throttle. Then with steady low rpm throttle it's fine. But after that initial acceleration, subsequent accelerations do not stumble. Also, when I let off the gas and the rpms are relatively high and I am "engine breaking", my exhaust pops until I give it more gas again. This popping is also worse initially and then is not as severe once I have been driving for a bit and sometimes even goes away completely if it is a longer drive. Does this sound like the same issues people have been mentioning? MAP/o2/timing/throttle body? Or does this sound like it could be anything different

How did you end up fixing this issue?

It turned out I had a cracked exhaust manifold. I think when the car warms up, the metal expanded making the problem not so loud after driving for a while. so I put a new manifold and muffler on. The muffler had a hole rusted through it. The stumble and popping were still there but the sound was very muted thanks to the fixed exhaust, but I could still make out the popping on deceleration and there was still the occasional stumble. I changed the spark plugs and wires and it fixed it. No more stumble and no more popping on deceleration
