Low compression in cylinder #1 and P0301 code

So far it hasn’t been too bad, I’m in no hurry and I would have that doubt which I don’t like. The intake looks kinda difficult but I know it wasn’t born there.

If you're removing the head, make your life easy. Remove, or drop the front fender for easy access to all the manifold bolts. That 30 minutes will save you hours of frustration both removing and installing the manifolds I promise you.

Hmmm, what or how did you come to the conclusion the springs were bad? I like your Idea, I’m about to remove the exhaust and intake to remove the head.
@CodaMan is on the money. Valve springs are a cheap and simple fix using his suggestion with the rope. You already have the valve cover off, so I would at least try that before removing the head. Keep it simple with the process of elimination.

Well I decided to redo the the air pressure check and checked to make sure the piston was at TDC. The air came out the oil fill cap. I removed the head and the alces look good but the piston did not, looks like some of the top edge eroded or something. The bore is not scarred or any marks on the valves. Never seen this. The rest of cylinders look good with minimal carbon and no erosion marks. I still plan on having the head checked out and as for the piston, has anyone ever replaced one while the engine is in? Seems possible, probably need to measure the bore. here Some pics.

Yup you can pull the oil pan off and push it out if there isn't a ridge at the top of the cylinder. If there is a ridge you can cut it with a ridge reamer. Inspect the bore closely. Use a dial indicator to check for wear and out of round. Replace the piston, wrist pin, and rings with new. inspect the bearings closely too. Either mark, or look for existing marks on the rod cap. You want to make sure its on the right way before you tighten it. Lots of videos online to help you. If you can pull a head you can replace a piston. You got this.
 
What is the condition of the rest of the Jeep? If it is good, perhaps the rig is worth freshening the entire engine. In for a penny in for a pound. Also worth having the head rebuilt while it is off. Something to consider.

It’s the # 1 cylinder and there is no ridge, a little carbon ring. I think it could be done. The numbers on all the other cylinders were 142-150 and they look good, it is possible!

The Jeep is great, everything works, no rust, solid! The engine compression numbers are on the high end for the other cylinders and after I measure the bore on this cylinder may be the decision point. I’m still going to have the head checked out since it’s off, we’ll see!
