Got a 99 2.5. Under acceleration only and usually at speeds above 30mph, I’ll get get a miss. The jeep will just “hiccup”. Rarely, a spike in RPMs accompanies it. Has gotten worse over the last few months but is nowhere near a consistent issue. Sometimes it’ll not do it or I’ll get one, other times I’ll get several in a row. No codes.
Fuel pump is new, IAC is newish, cat and muffler < 1 year, I’ve replaced plugs, cap, rotor, plug wires and fuel injectors. Manually turned over the engine and felt zero play before it engaged, and wiggled the distributor and noticed no play in it.
So now I’m at the point of where anything else is going to get expensive. I bought the jeep at 126k, it has 190k now. Almost positive the timing chain was never replaced at FSM recommended 120k, so I bought a kit/gasket to do so, even though I felt no slack turning over the engine. Yet to install it. Distributor I have no idea how to test other than if it’s “loose” trying wiggle it, indicating bearing wear.
Friend suggested the crank sensor, but I have no codes, and the sensor is usually an all or nothing thing if it fails I believe.
Any suggestions on other shadetree diagnostics I can run?
Edit: will say I haven’t run compression test yet, on the list for today, but if something was horribly wrong, wouldn’t I hear it? Especially with manual turnover?
