My first Jeep 2006 LJ (looking for hardtop recommendations and half doors)

I just bought my first Jeep, earlier this week. It's a 2006 Rubicon LJ, with 88k miles, automatic on 33s.

A buddy of mine pointed me to this forum. I'm glad to be here, so much good information!

My LJ only has a soft top, and I'll love to get a hard top for it. Any recommendations?

Also, I'd *really* love to find some yellow half-doors. What's the best way to go about finding some of these? I'd imagine this needs to be a national search, as contacting a local salvage yard would have such an incredibly low probability of success. Any pointers on finding the half doors to make my Jeep dream come true?

Now that's a nice looking LJ!

For hardtops, the only (and I can't stress this enough) hard top you want is an OE Mopar hardtop, plain and simple. Accept NO substitutes.

For half doors, keep your eye on this forum, eBay, https://daveysjeeps.com and https://www.car-part.com

You're unlikely to find them in yellow, so it's almost a guarantee you'll have to paint them.

Do you know if your Jeep came from the factory with a hardtop? If it did, all the wiring/switches/connectors should be there for the wiper/washer/defrost for an easy installation. If not, there are 2 posts here in the How-To forum on how to swap out the harness for a factory set up. The factory top would be the nicest option.

All aftermarket tops that I know of won't have wiper/washer/defrost options.

My Unlimited didn't come from the factory with a hardtop so I have none of the wiring. The previous owner had a Rally Tops hard top installed at some point. It is ok, I had no real complaints. I liked the carpeted interior and the sliding/screened side windows. It did leak a little bit near the lower corners of the rear glass and near the passengers side front where it meets the windshield. Nothing that a little black RTV couldn't fix. I took it off and hung it under my workshop carport in 2017 when I bought my soft top.

GR8TOPS has the Safari Cab and Half Cab tops if you're interested in those styles.

GOOD point. I didn't even think of this (I'm new, and NOT mechanically inclined!). If I had to guess, I'd guess it never had a hard top. This is based on...nothing. I'll investigate.

My big challenge is that I live in Seattle (think, RAIN), and I don't have a garage to park it in. I think I have no choice but to get a hard top.

When you find a set of doors make sure you get the doors and the interior panels. Junkyards will consider them 2 different parts. In my experience it was far more difficult to find the panels than the doors.

Prices for tops and doors go from mild to wild. Make sure both are in good condition. Hardtops are essential in extreme weather areas IMHO. I like your Jeep. The more yellow Jeeps I see, the more it grows on me. Enjoy your new rig and say goodbye to wealth and sanity as you retreat into extreme OCD territory.

If it had a hard top, it might still have the defrost and wiper switches on the dash below the radio, unless they were removed for some reason. Also, there should be a connector at the rear corner near the roll bar. Drivers side I think.

There is a site you can put your VIN in and get a build sheet with all option your Jeep came with but I don't have it. Maybe someone else will know the link.

Bull Dog MFG is about to launch an TJ Unlimited hard top. There's a couple of options that involve a higher payload rating for roof carry and also some flip up windows so you can reach the gear in the back more easily.

Half doors and LJ hardtops are hard to find in good condition. Check Craigslist and Facebook Marketplace frequently. I paid $220 for half doors but the drivers side has some bondo repair and the outside door handle does not work. I also need to get them wrapped or painted to match.

Craigslist will be your friend for the Hardtop. I come across them all the time. I think there are 2 for sale withing 100 miles of me right now. expect to pay between $1500 to $2500 for one though

Slick looking LJ! Welcome to the club!

I've had some pretty good luck finding parts for my LJ on the Facebook market. Got a set of factory rock rails and a set of halfdoors with uppers off there.

Keep checking FB marketplace and craigslist. Bought a pair of doors with uppers yesterday in really good shape for $250. Wrong color but at that price I can paint them.
