Mysterious rattle

Good to know. I'll look into that... and update results... Is this a DIY for a non mechanic? More to the point, can I reach that area without major work? I'm not afraid of small projects.

The hardest part of this job is pulling the skid plate off and supporting the motor/tranny. After that its pretty easy. There are a few good video's on youtube on how to do it. Took me about 2 hours and 4 beers.

Okay, this is great. I've watched some videos and now I can see exactly what going on. Gives me a little peace of mind. Now the rattle won't bother me as much until i can get the new assembly installed. I'm afraid that job is too much for me. Thanks again.

I have recently noticed a rattling noise coming from the center of the Jeep. I have been investigating this for about a week now and I think I uave ruled out any sort of suspension components making the noise. I crawled under the TJ and tried to move all of the suspension parts, all seems rock solid. I don't currently have jack of any kind so these tests were done with all 4 wheels on the floor. But like I said everything there looked good. The noise is coming from about where the 4WD actuator is, if I put my hand down there while driving, I can actually feel the rattle on the tub. This isn't a persistent noise, it only happens during slow acceleration & hitting bumps while accelerating. Once I get up to speed, say 30mph, the rattling all but stops. It will occasionally make the noise if I hit a bump, but it seems to be more cause by acceleration. I have not had a chance to get back underneath and have a look see, but I figured I would post this for some tips on where/what to look for when I do. Could this be a transmission or motor mount? I have browsed the forum for some knowlege but I am still searching for a line. It is becoming more prevalent and loud over the past week or so, what do you all think it could be? I am having the same issue. It doesn't start rattling either until it reached operating temp. It's hard to pin point what it is cause I was in an accident a couple months ago shortly after getting the jeep lol lady hit me on the drivers side and got it "fixed" after a view visits to the dealership my in laws work out...

Basically starts rattling once I slow down and hit below 30mph as well and even does it without braking !

Took it back to explain the issue and they came up with a bad read axle shaft in the back and all the axles are fine !

I'm reading all the replies here and hoping it helps the trouble shooting. I just want my jeep working decently and have fun in it this summer

I recently replaced the rear track bar bolts on my TJ to eliminate a clunking/rattle noise. 12mm x 80mm grade 8 bolts.

I don’t know if you’ve found what was rattling, but after reading of the accident it jogged my memory of a similar noise I also experienced several years ago “post accident” in my GMC Sonoma pickup truck.

It was ceramic material inside the catalytic converter that shattered and was rattling. I discovered it by looking under the truck & smacked the converter bottom with my hand and heard that noise again.
