Howdy, just joined since I just got my hands on a 2001 TJ Sport 4.0 . When I was younger, one of my first rides was a 1999 Sahara with the 2.5 and a 5spd that my dad had as an extra vehicle, and I loved that thing but always wished it was the 4.0 (especially when I was in 5th gear). Well I finally just got my own 15 years later, and I got a good deal on it. Good condition, has no rust and everything works but does need the clear coat repaired, some suspension work (front endlink cape apart, already have new endlinks and shocks all the way around ready to go in) AND likely needs a transmission. It grinds going into every gear. Double clutching helps, but considering it has 217k I think even switching to Redline MTL is a lost cause. Anyways, hoping to get her patched up so I can enjoy driving it without double clutching it.

If it grinds in every gear I'd suspect it needs a clutch,pilot bearing,clutch hydraulics or all of them.

That's a good point, I didn't think of that because it doesn't grind when I go into 1st gear from a stop. BUT it's definitely a good place to start since the hydraulics are much cheaper than a trans. I'll go ahead and order them now, even if that isn't the issue I wouldn't mind having new hydraulics if I'm putting in a new trans. Don't think it's the pilot bearing as those usually make a noise. Supposedly the clutch is newer (it DOES grab very well, feels new) so I'd imagine / hope the pilot was replaced with it. Even so, I'll be putting in an HD LUK kit w/ a new pilot bearing if / when the trans comes out.

Yes, I think so. Goes into 1st smoothly, and shifts much better when I double clutch. So to me, it seems like the synchros are bad. And based on all the negative info about the NV3550 I see online, it seems a common issue. Others have mentioned it could be clutch hydraulics, but I don't think so. Air in the lines wouldn't be remedied by a double clutch, and while a leak would the fluid level is unchanged.
