2005 4.0 42rle. Went to go to work this am & had no reverse. No check engine light, code reader says P0736 & P0700. No problems before. Anyone else encountered this problem before or know of a fix?

That's a nasty code without others. A very good shop can perform the reverse gear test with a DRB3 or equivalent. If your fluid level is correct you are looking at something internal that needs repair. Unfortunately I don't think it's possible that the solenoid pack is the problem because the reverse clutch is activated by the L/R solenoid and you'd get other codes if that was bad or failing.

I can here the normal electric sound of engaging in reverse but zero movement, like it wants to catch but cant. It seems that drive, 1st, 2nd will work but I dont want to test it tonight as I possibly might block my neighbors ability to access his road. The fluid level is good if not slightly over. Unfortunately I dont have access to any good shops. I unplugged the battery for 2hrs and read the codes again & now I am getting random transmisson control module internal failures:
38 wheel speed error
73 inoperable watchdog inhibit
72 ROM incident
71 RAM incident

Hello. Can u tell please about ur problem. What it was?

I didn't see that coming.

But seriously, did they say WHY it needed a rebuild? What failed?

Apparently the reverse gear is weak in the 42’s. Prob toasted the band going in reverse on a steep incline in my driveway, hard to tell with overdrive. Its an 05 so ~17yo original trans with an unknown previous history. Can’t tell you exactly what was replaced. I got a Bullripper transmission out of Oregon

I lost reverse today. Feels like neutral. I think I’ll remove my skid plates, put the small tires on and use forward to drive to my local reputable transmission shop. 🤷🏼‍♂️

I got mine rebuilt by a company in Oregon, bullripper model. I am youtube mechanically inclined enough to remove the trans & install it but not rebuilding one. Its been over a yr with no problems

I can pull and replace but not rebuild. Local guy rebuilds them amd prefers to install himself. The additional cost of him removing and reinstalling makes that warranty hold up much better. I looked at bullripper and a few others but local makes me feel better. 🇺🇸
