My friends 1998 manual Jeep tj is making a strange noise in the engine, not sure what it could be.

The Jeep 4.0L I-6 is known to get cracks in the exhaust manifold where the tubes join for the cylinders down near the collector.
On my '98 XJ 4.0L in the 20+ years that I owned the Jeep I went thru two factory tubular headers and 3 Gale Banks headers due to cracking.
The factory tubular header was redesigned to alleviate the problem to the extent of installing expansion joints in two of the tubular runners and the problem still returned.

I'm not sure what they're hearing but I hear a loud high pitched metallic noise.
Take your belt off...start it for just a few seconds.
Noise gone?
Replace belt....
Track down the culprit.

Yeah I’m aware of an exhaust leak but I’m more concerned with the high pitched squeaking noise. All I know is that it’s coming from the engine bay
I will try that. It’s a high pitched noise and all I know is that it’s coming from the engine bay, I think maybe the top end.

The noise I hear (I work on this shit for decades) is a noise coming from the very front area.
As in I've heard that noise before...now it's the internet so I can't hear it in person obviously but IMO you've got a pulley/fan clutch area noise.
If it were brought here for diagnosis we'd stethoscope the front and confirm what is making that racket.
You...the quickest way to put you in the general vicinity of the noise is to take the belt off...start it...noise gone?
Only run it with the belt off for 5-10 seconds. You'll know immediately if the noise is gone or not.
