Ticking noise coming from engine

Hey everyone, I have a '99 TJ 4.0, 5 speed manual with about 180k miles on it and been having issues with it making a ticking noise from the engine. It's not the first time it's has been ticking, but it will usually go away if I change the oil. I've been using Valvoline conventional 5W-30.

I'm pretty positive it's a lifter tick, but i want to make sure. I might end up replacing the lifters just to get it over with.

If the tick goes away suddenly it is definitely lifter tick and nothing to worry about. Some people have good luck switching brands or types of oil, for example switch from synthetic to conventional or from Valvoline to Quakerstate. My valves start to tick every time I push my oil change much beyond 3,000 miles, I just use it as a reminder to change the oil. I wouldn't change the lifters personally.

Yeah it just gets annoying, especially when you have the doors off and just hear that constant tick. I just changed the oil not even 700 miles ago. Maybe i'll switch brands and use synthetic and try that out.

You might try 10w-30 if you think the temperatures will be warm enough.

I changed all 12 at 193k. All but 1 were seized when I took them out.

I had a ticking in my jeep. It sounded like a diesel. I had found the sound came from the bottom end. Pretty sure I had a bad wrist pin. Got an eagle engine motor with warranty and had my mechanic put it in. About 6 months later had to swap out the nv3550 with an new ax-15 aid in warner.

Add a qt of diesel or ATF just before oil change. Run the engine for 10-15 minutes at various rpms. It should cure a sticky lifter. Not a stuck lifter though. And

I also had a lifter tick in my 4.0L. Noisy at start up and came and went then back again. I heard of Xado EX120 adative and gave it a try $50 on Amazon. It actual stopped my ticking within 10 minutes of adding into the engine.

Seized eh? How about full of oil and unable to compress them. Of course you replaced the cam as well right?

Mine ticks a bit at startup, stops after a few minutes. Every now and then it'll be really loud for like 30 seconds. I wouldn't worry about it unless the tick is constant.

I'm having a very familiar sound on mine after completing a head swap. I'll add that before the head swap there was no ticking... It also seems to match the rpm of the engine when revving. Any suggestions? I used 5w-30 conventional oil.

Are you sure you have all your rockers on correctly? Mayb pull that valve cover and take a look. No noise before and instant noise after install? Constant or does it go away?

It is constant and seems to coincide with the rpm of the engine - the higher the rev the faster the tick... Cold/hot engine it stays consistent. Pulling the valve cover this weekend. I even added MMO and the engine sounded better but the ticking was just the same, just clearer, lol.
