NV3550 or NSG370

Hey Chris,

Riddle me this. I have an 06 wrangler, 4cylinder that is seized since it popped into gear while being towed. Would the ax15 bolt right up to the frame without modification? What years of engines would bolt up to the ax15? Do all 4.0/2.4 have the same bolt patterns across each year and transmission relative to the same engine(I.e. 99 4.0 vs 06 4.0)

Thanks!

It’s a 4-cylinder so one of the 6-cylinder transmissions will bolt up without a different bell-housing.

You could put in an AX-5 but an AX-15 would be better.

Yes I get that part, I just was curious if the bolt patterns for all 4 cylinder engines was the same no matter the transmissions, does that make what I’m asking more clear?

I’m just trying to find the best route on what to do, say if I go with an ax15 and replace my nsg370. What changes have to be made for this to work? Will there be sensor issues? These are some of the things I’ve struggled to find answers on, I appreciate the input.

Thanks

I couldn't recommend the Mercedes trans (NSG370). Unless it just had the $2500 dollar rebuild. I got lucky and mine doesn't pop out of first or reverse. It only grinds hard on 1-2 and 2-3 shifts..... So annoying....

I have never understood why Jeep used Mercedes parts on the TJ! They broke more than they fixed.

From the interwebs:

The Daimler-Chrysler merger in 1998 was a landmark $36 billion deal creating the world's fifth-largest automaker, aiming to combine luxury (Mercedes-Benz) and mass-market strengths
, but it ultimately failed due to significant cultural clashes between German precision and American corporate styles, unrealized synergies, and poor integration, leading to Daimler selling Chrysler to private equity in 2007, a move that marked the end of the failed "merger of equals" experiment.

The ratios in the NSG-370 are much better than the NV3550 or AX-15 in mountain driving. 6th in the 370 is lower than 5th in the 5-speeds and the closer grouping of 3-4-5 in the 370 works better than the 3-4 combo in the 5-speeds when you're on steepening mountain highway grades to the degree that alot of the 05-06 Rubicons could comfortably run 33s without a re-gear. Unfortunately some of the NSG-370s seem to be made of butterkase.

If you really want one, you can find them for $40k or so.

I'm building my own. Most of the perceived difference between a luxury model and a cheap car comes down to $400 or so of sound deadening. Don't think I'll be the madman to do a Merc 5.5L swap though.
