Painting Stock Bumper

My rear bumper has started to show its age and it is kind of fading. I was thinking of taking it off and spraying it with a few coats rustoleum black after some self etching primer. I'm a novice in painting so excuse me if this is a dumb question, but should I sand the bumper down to bare metal and then paint it, or should I clean and degrease thoroughly and then paint it without sanding it. Also for those of you who have painted your bumpers with rattle cans, how does it hold up?

I've sprayed my old stock bumpers that faded. I just cleaned them good with Dawn dish liquid and water and sprayed them without sanding. Most newer paints don't require a primer. They held up great. I don't have any good close up pics.

MIne had some minor surface rust so I sanded the entire bumper applied self-etching primer and painted it. It's only been a year but it is holding up well.

I have used tractor implement paint in the past from tractor supply company it comes in a spray can it is an oil based paint it holds up extremely well and coverage goes a long way it's basically the only paint I use for bumpers undercoating frames axles etc

No sanding for me. I only cleaned mine up pretty good to remove any dirt and wax/grease. I then painted them with SEM Trim Black. It went on good and still looks nice.

I used Rustoleum satin black bumper paint. Has held up well so far. Otherwise, what everyone else said: clean and paint-no need to go down to bare metal unless you are looking for a concourse-worthy finish.

As long as there isn’t any scaling/ peeling a thorough cleaning will suffice. The nice thing about a rattle can job is that touch ups will be nice and easy also
