Pilot Bearing Options

What's the issue with a standard pilot bearing and why are you thinking about this modification? Once the solid bearing got dirty it's all over.

if the pin bearing seizes it almost always destroys where it rides on the input shaft. vs with the bushing it wouldn't seize. I imagine the tolerance would be tight enough to where dirt wouldn't go inside the bushing itself.

But I could be wrong...
 
I just finished pulling the transmission out of my 05 LJ. There was intermittent squealing from the bell housing. Found the pilot and throwout bearing dry and rusty. This LJ was sold and has lived its whole live in Nevada, I guess the damage is due to mileage and running in deep water. Even at that, they lasted 95,000 miles.

Bad idea. Oilite bushings are self-lubricating plain bearings meant for low speed applications. Look at the Max V spec:

Those units are "Surface Feet per Minute." You convert that from sf/m to RPM by dividing the sf/m by the circumference of the interface (the ID) and get:

In other words, just idling your engine exceeds the Max V spec! Don't do it!

Nevermind - units error above!!! Forgot to convert feet to inches. When I do, the RPM is twelve times higher! Doh! Rather than delete my post, I'll add a correction.

So it looks like Vmax is okay. The engine I have in there right now has a RPM redline of 4000 RPM.
