Please help diagnose this sound: Metallic squealing only while in gear and driving

So, I have this weird metallic squealing/ticking sound with my 2006 LJ 6-speed manual that occurs during the following:

Foot off the clutch and moving with gas depressed (forward and reverse): yes
Coasting (moving with no gas and foot on the clutch): no
Jeep at idle in neutral: no
Jeep in neutral with gas pressed: no

Could this be the clutch, or a throw out bearing, something else? Transmission and transfer case fluid changed within the year and relatively new.

Jeep has 100k miles on it.


I'm calling this sound squealing because I'm suspecting maybe the throw out bearing?

Here is quick video of the sound. When it stops all of the sudden it is because I depress the clutch pedal. Also, it doesn't have anything to do with turning. It makes the sound whether I'm turning or not I just happened to be having to make a right turn. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Sounds like a bad transmission input shaft bearing.

A bearing noise that occurs when releasing the clutch pedal to engage the clutch while in neutral, but goes away when the pedal is depressed is caused by a bad transmission input shaft bearing.

That isn't anything from the axles or driveshaft. My guess is definitely engine. Front accessory belt, clutch, even engine mount, or as Chris said, input bearing. But it is caused by engine, not drivetrain. Sometimes just putting a bit of load on the engine can cause a vibration to occur.

Thanks for your replies. Yeah - after some more digging and reading other reports I was also thinking the input shaft as that seemed to be a common thread. If it is the input shaft bearing, is there any additive I could use to quite it down? That would buy me some time before I need to do the repair as well as possibly confirm that it is the source of the problem.

Currently in the transmission I'm using the Royal Purple synchromax oil.

I would definitely check the universal joints in the front and rear driveshafts. Especially any double cardan joints.
