Re-gearing a 4.0 32RH 3-speed automatic

I have a TJ with a 3 speed 4.0 auto with 3.07 gears. I'm looking to run 33s. All the charts say that the 4.10 gears are right in the middle as far as performance but everyone I've read rave about the 4.88s they installed. The chart has the 4.88 at the high end if running 33s.

This has me between a rock and a hard place because I can find used, complete Dana 30/35 with 4.10 gears relatively cheap. However if I go with 4.88s, it's going to be significantly more expensive...

4.10 would be spot on for your setup. 4.88 would be a huge mistake with that 32RH. It doesn't need to be geared nearly as aggressively as the other transmissions due to it only having 3-speeds.

You would be turning 3900 RPM at 75 mph with 4.88, 33s, and the 32RH. That would put a lot of stress on the engine, be very noisy, and get awful fuel economy. (On the plus side, you could pass slow people super easily.)

4.10s are a much better bet, and will put you at 3200 RPM at 75, which is a safe bet. 3.73 would probably give you slighly better fuel economy, but the 4.10 would be best all around for economy and torque.

Stick with the 4.10 gear axle swap to save money. I ran 4.56 gears with that trans and 32s and the highway rpms were very high. On another Jeep, I swapped in some 4 cylinder Jeep axles with 4.10 gears and ran 33s and it was perfect.

The 4.88 recommendations for 33's and automatic you read about were for the 4-speed 42RLE automatic, not your 3-speed automatic. 4.10 is what you need for 33's with your 32RH.

Swap in the axles with the 4.10s a lot cheaper than a regear and will do great with that trans and 33s....I did the same. Found mine on craiglist both front and rear for $200.
