Rear axle retaining plate

Hi all,

I have a question about the rear axle retaining plate (2006 Rubicon) - is the curved lip supposed to point inward (toward diff) or outward? I can't remember how it was originally, the service manual doesn't specify and I have conflicting info. The Timken instructions have it pointing outward, but most images online have it pointing inward. Does it matter?

I’m almost positive it points inwards like the picture for disc brake equipped axles and the opposite for drum brakes.

Points in like the picture. Drum brakes use a flat plate with no lip.

Thanks. I have disc brakes, so I guess the Timken diagram is not appropriate. It threw me, since every photo and video showed it pointing inward.

That drawing, which is really about changing the bearing, may be a universal that serves as a generic guide focused specially around the bearing.

The above recommendations are right on, the raised lip on the retainer definitely faces inward toward the differential.
