I know, another regear thread. 5 speed manual 1998 2.5L. Stock except for the 31 inch tires.

I'm waffling between 4.56 or 4.88 for a regear. I will not go bigger than 31's on the Jeep because my wife, who has back issues, enjoys driving the Jeep but it's already at the max height for her to get in and out. I'm happy with the 31's. It's a very competent off road vehicle, especially for what I use it for in Florida. It's also fine around town. It's awful on the expressway and interstate. I rarely get to fifth, and downshift all the way to third at times to give it some actual "go".

Keeping in mind that I have no intention of going above 31 inch tires, is moving from stock 4.10 to 4.56 appropriate, or do I need to go down to 4.88? I'm a little spooked about 4.88 as I don't want the RPM's to be absurd at 70 mph on the interstate. Has someone regeared a 2.5L TJ but stayed with 31's, and if so, what did you do and are you happy with the results?

So, not the 2.5 but I do have the 2.4 and 31's. I went with 4.88 and have no regerts ( :D ). I am at 3k rpm at 68 mph verfied by gps, which is fine for me. If you spend lots of time on the hwy at 70+, 4.56 would still be a great improvement over the 4.10's.
