Removing key while jeep is running

I have a Tuffy locking console in my jeep for locking up my pistol at work. If I forget to get it before I leave until I start driving I can pull my key out of the ignition to use the Tuffy key. I've done it a lot of times with no issue. Today I pulled it out and realized I used my S-10 key to start my Jeep today. For shits and grins I tried to start my truck with the Jeep key and it didn't work. I guess I'm going to change my ignition cylinder since it'll start with the wrong key. Just wanted to give people that enjoy this feature a heads up. I remember reading a post about someone else being able to pull the key out when running.

I'd try another different key and see what happens. Maybe that particular S10 key is one of the few that will start the Jeep and a different one won't work. If so, I wouldn't worry about it. Of course if a screwdriver can start it, that's another story altogether.

My CJ5 key can be pulled out at in any position but if the lever to lock the wheel isn't used no key is needed to start it. I always keep that in mind.

It sounds like the tumblers in your cylinder are worn out, you should be able to pull the key out or use another key

I liked the added option but not if any key that slides in will work. Now I need to find a lock cylinder that'll work with my key without breaking the bank.

The automatic coding is worth the additional cost. I replaced mine recently and it was so simple I thought I’d done something wrong. Basically, you insert the cylinder into the tool then insert your key, rotate once clockwise, then one rotation back and the lock cylinder comes out coded to your key.

Is your key chipped ? Grey color ?
If so you can only start your Jeep with that key. You should not be able to start it with the S-10 key if it’s grey. If it’s black then yea you got a problem.
I pull mine out while it’s running often like it’s a modern vehicle but once you lock the Key cylinder it won’t start if it’s chipped for more than 3 seconds

No mine isn't chipped so I'm going to change it.

I accidentally stuck my BMW key in and drove to the store. Didn't realize until I got there.
My kid could start his w/ a piece of cardboard, we changed his cylinder out.
