RPM Swing

Thanks in advance for all your input. I bought a 2006 Wrangler about two months back. It has recently developed a swing in the rpms when I am traveling 60 - 65 mph. The tach will drop 400 rpms when I am traveling in overdrive. When in high gear out of overdrive, the tach drops about 200 rpms. The rpm drop occurs and then goes right back to when it was previously running. It is not a one time occurrence rather happens repeatedly. I do not think the transmission is shifting down when this happens. This is happening when I am traveling in non-hilly areas. It is not doing it consistently. It may be a non-event for entire trips but then shows back up. One other note, it has died on me twice while traveling. The first time it started right back up. The second time it took several tries and 20 minutes before cranking. As I was trying to start it, the engine would fire but would not pick up and run. Thanks again for your troubleshooting input.

Specifically- did you disengage OD by pressing the O/D off button and try it? Just wondering.

I did take it out of OD manually by pressing the switch.

So were the rpm fluctuations occurring in or out of O/D, or both?

Never mind, I see where you stated it dropped 400 rpm in O/D & 200 when out of O/D...it sounds like the torque converter locking/unlocking, but that should be more consistent.

I don't think the starting issue is related, but I've been wrong before...

The starting and dying issue is unrelated I think. Have you checked to see if there are any check engine lights or error codes? That's the first place I would start.

The RPM issue is one I haven't heard of before, but are you saying it only happens when you engaged or disengage the overdrive button?

It happens when in OD and not. I did have a check engine light come on after it died on me but it cleared before I could get it checked out.

Sounds to me then like you’re having torque converter issues. Especially since it’s just random.

OK. Thanks a bunch. I have located a mechanic that I think will be able to help. I'll post the solution once I get there. I appreciate the guidance.

Thanks for the help with this. I have replaced the Throttle Control Sensor and so far (100 miles later), it appears to have corrected the swing. I spent $34 on the replacement Sensor. Thanks again.
