Rubicon Trail Trip Spare Axles?

A couple of buddies ran it 2 years ago. One was a very nicely built TJ Unlimited.

The other was a 2 dr JL on 37's. That guy got in a little bind, broke a front shaft. It wasn't in a good spot and was blocking the trail without a bypass, so they tried to get off the trail and unstuck, broke the other side in the front. While continuing with a winch to get out of the way, they broke a rear axle. No one had spares. The guy with the TJ, left them to watch the rig, drove into the springs, out Cadillac, over to Tahoe, and then finally to Truckee before he rounded up enough parts to get the rig put back together. About 200 miles on the highway and then back from the beginning of the trail to come up behind his friend and get him all fixed up. And that's why you build street friendly rigs on 40's.

I think people may be missing the point in the story that you built the said LJ on 40s that drove into the Rubicon trail, drove out, went picked up parts and did the trail AGAIN. Balanced builds are really amazing.

The Sluices are all part of the Trail.
My opinion if you didn't run them you did a By Pass.

Old Sluice looks kinda difficult to me but I'm just a web wheeler.

It is, my brother-in-law several years ago burnt out his clutch in his CJ. They relayed in a new one and replaced in out there.

I ran it last weekend with @Alex01 , we didn't do any of the bypasses and we had no problem. But stuff can happen. The only spares I carried was a rear driveshaft , fluids , and ignition parts. I usually don’t use much skinny pedal and try my best to crawl everything but I have seen a TJ on 35s blow a rear ring and pinion and a front axle shaft on a 2 foot ledge so I think it will come down to your driving style.

X2.

Ujoints and axle straps are likely the only things that would break. But it's a busy trail so if a horrible event happens chances are a guy with a welder will be by within the hour.

Bring extra beers for payment lol.

Not entirely correct.

Little Sluice is part of the main trail, but there is an alternate route next to it or you can go across the slabs on the other side of it and drop it after it.

Old Sluice is an alternate route and not part of the main trail. The main trail runs next to it. Old Sluice isn't all that bad.

Big Sluice is part of the main trail with no alternate, but its super easy with multiple lines.

The Rubicon isn't all that hard. Its as hard as you want to make it.

Ran it many times with my friends dad and his M38. Complete vintage time capsule 70s build and never had any issues running from Loon all the way into Tahoe. Same with the extra cab, single case, IFS Toyotas that have come along with us.

Be patient, choose your lines wisely, and you don't need to bash your way through like the people breaking lots of stuff.
