02 Jeep TJ 4 0 automatic. Problem shifting from reverse to drive when cold engine wants to stall. Once warmed up no problem. Jeep only has 40k. Any ideas

Can you describe exactly what is happening when it does what you're describing as a "stall"? The engine is stalling/dying? Or do you really mean the Jeep just won't move when shifting from reverse to drive, as in the engine revs but the Jeep doesn't move?

In the morning we start the Jeep let it warm up for about 5 minutes put it in reverse back out of the driveway into the cul-de-sac which is flat as soon as we shift into drive the motor will stall. We we shift back to park, start engine, shift back to drive and it still seems to hesitate a bit until warms up another 2 to 5 minutes then it runs fine.

This is a long-shot but someone just described the same problem with an improbable fix...

1) Start the engine
2) Pull the parking brake on.
3) Shift into Neutral
4) Use the rear-most dipstick (the one for the transmission) to check the ATF level while the engine is running and the transmission is in Neutral.

If the level is not up to the Full mark, add enough ATF+4 to bring it up to that level. Make sure not to add any other type of ATF, it must only be ATF+4.

Was planning to change the transmission fluid and filter. Can check fluid using mentioned procedure above. Question can I mix ATF 4 brands together. Also when I go to change fluid what brand is recommended I don't see a lot of options at local shops

Yes, various brands of ATF+4 are all compatible with each other. Check its level and condition first before deciding to flush it. If it's low, bring it all the way up to full and see if the shifting problem goes away. Automatics are very sensitive to being low on ATF.

Curious to why you are thinking this would cause the engine to stall? If it was low I would suspect it to slip till the clutches had enough fluid, and the car wouldn't move, but the engine should still fire.

Not second guessing your diagnosis; just wondering what if anything, I am missing anything. Do TJ's have a fail-safe if the fluid is low it kills the motor?

My thought would be more the torque converter or rather a sticky solenoid keeping the torque converter locked up. That said my diagnosis doesn't make sense because if what I am saying is true then the engine would stall going into reverse.

I am kind of thinking that it may not be trans related at all, but is a coincidence.

Try this if you are inclined. Tonight back into the driveway, and try the opposite. I would like to see what happens if you pull out forward then put it into reverse and see if the same thing happens?

Also are you getting any check engine lights?

I made no diagnosis, I suggested something someone else said worked with the same symptom and described it as a "long-shot" and an "improbable fix". But, again, that person described the exact same symptom and said he later determined his transmission was nearly completely out of ATF. No telling what a transmission that low on ATF might do.

Fair enough. I have a good amount of automatic transmission experience, and no Tj automatic experience, so I am trying to learn something new. I am curious to how this plays out.

Would like to report back on this issue. I finally got around to checking the transmission fluid level using the above procedure. Found it low by just over a quart. Added the additional fluid last night. My son reported back today that it did not stall today and it shifted a lot smoother. Thank you all for the good advice.
