Speedometer gear falls out

I put on 35" tires and changed the speed sensor gear from 28 to 34. It worked great for a few days then stopped. When I checked it I found that the gear fell out of the sensor and I have to pull it out of the back of the transfer case. What is supposed to hold the gear in the sensor? TIA

There is a little horseshoe piece that is bolted down and slots into the grooves in the flange of the speedo sensor. If your sensor fell out it sounds like that probably fell out first.

Unfortunately he is talking about how the whole assembly is held into the transfercase. Are you correctly clocking the assembly for the tooth count? Different gears are different diameter and the hole in the sensor is off center,so you need to rotate it to get the right clearance.

Does it take less effort to pull the new gear out of the sensor compared to the old one?

I think they both pull out easy

I bought one and it keep doing strange things. Work, don't work, bouncing spedometer.

I put the old one in and bought a speedo healer.

That usually happens when it's clocked incorrectly. I didn't quite understand the clocking bit and had quite an adventure with mine.
