Do turbos whine like that?

Between the whine and a comment saying it was supercharged, I just assumed that was the case… but I know next to nothing about the FI world.

I have no idea. I had to google up 2JZ ( ) but one commenter claimed 2JZ and another claimed they heard a turbo blow off valve.

Haha I did the same, and now I’m googling all kinds of supercharger nonsense (go team!) 😂

I found a few, and posted them a day or so ago in another thread. No research into it yet tho

Low budget

Another

Found another also, cant find it now

I have the Banks kit it hasn’t been offered since around 2019.

Jezza (skilled forum member) knows his stuff and was kind enough to make a kit for us 4.0L folks interested in going FI.

He’s also got a good thread that tracks his progress on his LJ.

Does your SC'd rig do this @bluescapegoat

I was always afraid to try anything crazy with 37s and stock shafts :ROFLMAO: I mostly just installed it for helping with merging on the highway and some of the steep hill climbs around here where it was running out of steam even with 5.13s.

One of the reasons I'm doing this rebuild with mid arms/35s/chromoly and RCVs is so I can get more rowdy.

I also immediately thought that sounded like a 2JZ. I'm an old school Toyota fanboy at heart, don't tell anyone

This makes great sense, no sense in grenading your rig.

Please posts vids when u do that stuff is fun to watch.

So it likely is a turbo? That’s amazing :)

Turbo for sure. 2JZs are epic little engines. Pretty easy to get 750hp+ out of them and they're very reliable. Keeps the straight 6 spirit alive in the TJ too, I always thought that would be my favorite swap for the TJ. I can hear the turbo too. You'll know the roots blower whine when you hear it- it's not subtle.

2JZ

M90 blower, same model on my TJ

Fun little nerd knowledge nobody asked for for Toyota engines:
First number is generation of the motor, second letter or two is the engine family. There is also a 1JZ, for instance. Then a hyphen, then the following letters correspond to other features on the engine. a 2JZ-GTE is a 2JZ block with a performance head, turbo, and fuel injection. I've got a Celica ST185 in the stable with a 3S-GTE engine, but there is also a 3S-GE variant without the turbo, and some people do stroker mods by swapping a 5S-FE block to make a 5S-GTE. It's all kind of neat stuff to me, anyway. So if you put a blower on a 2JZ you'd essentially make yourself a 2JZ-GZE, the Z being the indicator for a supercharger in the Toyota family.

I was wondering if that’s why he revved up the engine (to get into boost), and I heard the BOV sound, but that damn whine really threw me off.

Then I started searching if superchargers have a BOV sound and things just went down hill from there 😂

Centrifugal superchargers do. They're essentially a belt driven turbo, so you can have the benefit of quicker spool like a supercharger but with a turbo whistle and blowoff. They're nice because they can be mounted up anywhere you can fit it and get a belt around it. ProCharger is a term you'll hear thrown around a lot. That's just a well established brand that specializes in centrifugal chargers.

Turbos do whine though, you can get a cool whistle from them like you hear on big diesels. But it often gets muffled by the intercooler

For whatever reason the new-to-me banks turbo doesn't sounds like turbo diesels I’ve driven. It makes more of a woosh sound as it comes under boost.

I believe my buddy's is a 2JZ-GTE in his Supra, built, dyno'd something like 710 at the wheels on ethanol.
