Synthetic 10w-30 in the AX-5

Well, I diddled around today and replaced the Royal Purple that was in my AX-5 transmission with Mobil-1 10w-30 synthetic. The difference was immediately noticeable. The transmission now downshifts from 3rd to 2nd and from 2nd to 1st without complaining too much. Upshifts are smoother and the whole range of transmission gears feels "lighter" and less resistant to changing gears. We'll see what transpires.

Oh, Royal Purple sucks in the AX-5, BTW.

Yup Jerry, so far the synthetic 10w-30 seems to be working pretty well. Glad you mentioned that tip in one of the other threads on here. Thanks for bringing it up. Took a gamble that you knew what you were talking about (ahem...) and thought that I would give it a try.

I have a feeling that this would work especially well in a fairly fresh AX-5.

I may be stubborn and hard headed, but I am trainable. Eventually...

I try to share what works and what doesn't. It's about what I can contribute to the general knowledge base on the TJ. Heaven knows it isn't much, but it is something. Thanks for sharing your immense knowledge of the TJ, learned from actually thrashing them out. There's more BS about these rigs floating around than actual good practical information.

Alrighty then. I've got three days on the transmission oil change and everything seems to have settled out into a new normal. The upshifts are improved. You can still feel the synchros do their job, but just barely. Pretty normal stuff for the AX-5 transmission. Downshifting is where the greatest improvement is felt. In gears three through five the apparent effort and drama involved is now the same for up shifting and down shifting. Just that slight hesitation as the synchros match up gear speeds. No grinding or gnashing of teeth. No blipping the throttle to force the gears to mesh. Down shifting into first from second is a non event as long as the road speed is appropriate. I still have to blip the throttle to down shift into first if the road speed is outside of the envelope of reasonable, but that's to be expected.

I'm calling Mobile-1 10w-30 synthetic motor oil in the AX-5 transmission a success. Thanks again Jerry!

Update on the Mobil 1 in the tranny. All is still well, and both the TJ and I are happy.

Glad it's still working well. Any good quality synthetic 10W-30 will work equally well in the AX5 or AX15, not just Mobil-1
