04 5 speed slight grinding

I have an 04 5 speed that has just started griding occasionally into second gear. It ONLY does it when it’s cold. It started doing this when it was -40 outside a couple weeks ago. When it has been below about -15 it definitely isn’t easy to shift for a few minutes until it warms up. It also will do it in reverse as well. But only 2nd and reverse, first is difficult to put it into gear but again when it’s negative 40 outside the other manual I drove a few times was like this as well (not a Jeep)

Today it was nice, 20* and it didn’t grind. Yesterday i was sub zero and it did grind once going into second.

This winter has absolutely been colder than last and it didn’t do this last year.

Tranny fluid is royal purple synchro max or mesh can’t remeber which but it’s the correct one, confirmed on multiple forums before adding, but cannot remeber.

When the transmission has warmed up it does not ever do it.

Is this the cold causing this or are my synchros going bad?

I feel like if the synchros were going bad it would do it warm too but I have no evidence for believing this. When the tranny is warm it shifts like butter. No resistance at all, no grinding. Really hoping my tranny isn’t going bad, I do not know what symptoms of a tranny going bad are in a manual.

134k miles. I do not clutchless shift, or grind gears.

Tips for warming up tranny without sitting there revving the engine idiling?

Clutch replaced last spring with a Luk clutch.

Also it usually only does it if I shift low. Again only when warming up when it’s super cold.

My 98, 5 speed does the same thing in the mornings after sitting outside all night in the cold mid west temps. I double clutch it and move slowly into the next gear until the transmission has warmed up, after that I don't have any issues.

My 05 does that as well. If you let the Jeep idle to warm up, put the transmission in gear, and the transfer case in neutral and that'll help warm it up. Or like lxxtsy said, double clutching works too.

Okay so I’m glad I’m not the only one with this.

I’m assuming the synchro in second is starting to go and the cold is affecting it?

I’ll try double clutching till it’s warm. Thanks guys. I am curious if this is “normal” or if this is the beginning of a worm synchro.
