curious whether those of you that have tried out a lot of different tires have noticed this or noticed any real-world impact to this feature.
BFG's shoulder lugs have always been visually appealing to me because the tread blocks seem to wrap around the shoulder for extra bite when aired down or in a rut where the shoulder is making contact. It also seems to be a common design feature on other more hardcore mud tires.
But when I look at a lot of other tires, like the Nitto Trail Grappler, General Grabber X3, Cooper and their related brands, they put this big rib around the perimeter. The result to my eye is that when the rib sticks out like on the Nitto, it would hold the lugs off of a surface, rendering them ineffective.
and when it's more tucked in, like the Wrangler Duratrac the side lugs look superficial and tacked on, like they would just rip off if spun hard against a rock. Even if that doesn't happen, I just think it's ugly, like they're trying to dress up an AT to make it look more aggressive.
