I am having very similar issues to this. My 97 4.0 auto has been down since September/October.
Sorry for the long post, but trying to be as specific as possible with everything that has been done since the jeep hasnt wanted to start. Added a video to help show what is going on. Can get a longer video if needed.
Parked it for a month and went to go start it and nothing. Checked and had no spark. Changed coil, cap, rotor. Still no spark. Battery is good and alternator is newer.
Sat for 2 months while trying to figure out what was wrong. Ended up getting it towed to the shop i work atso i can work on it. One tech noticed corroded wires under the fues box and fixed them. That fixed the spark.
The jeep would finally start and pudder for a second or two then die. Would back fire every once in a while.
Changed oil while it was at work because oil was fuel soaked. also changed the starter because the it got burnt out from starting it to much. Had to get it out of the shop because it was sitting too long. Got it towed over to a buddies house.
While it is at my buddies house. Put new timing chain and gear. Also put new ignition cylinder and key and ignition sensor. Ended up finding metal shavings in the oil and it was fuel soaked again. Found a motor for cheap. Had 180k on it but it ran before it was removed. Got it swapped and did the timing chain and gear again. Swapped over other parts needed to make it work in my jeep. Water pump and a couple sensors. Then just last week swapped the fuel pump. Still just starts putters for a few seconds and then dies. Finally got a garage where i live and got it towed there so i can work on it. Unfortunately he did more harm than good. So i had to go through after getting it back from him, and was in worse shape than when he took it in. Stuff was unplugged and stuff not bolted in at all or very little. Removed gas tank after finding a broken line. Just last week got everything bolted back in. Only thing now is getting it towed back to the shop where i work and removing the trans to fix the apparent trans leak from after the motor swap that my buddy did. Also have to finish puting a few trans bolt back in as well as torque converter bolts back in.
Another part that i had switched was my ignition actuator pin. After all of this im not sure if its not starting because of the trans not being bolted in properly or if it a computer issue.
