2006 rubicon with automatic and 31/2" lift. I was slowly backing out from the garage and thought id run over something or rubbed a tire against the garage door frame, short rough rumble. checked and everything looked ok, backed up another few feet and felt it again. the vibration and noise felt like it was coming from the rear of the jeep so i was focused on the rear driveshaft. Could hear a little squeaking backing up so I shot fresh grease into the driveshaft fittings, difficult to tell if the where the squeak was from but it seemed to go away, but i still could feel the shudder. put the jeep up on blocks and everything was very smooth running with no load in forward and reverse, also felt smooth spinning both rear wheels by hand.
after googling shudder on take off i found the threads on the transmission mount and my other symptoms I've recently noticed seem related? at stoplights I've noticed recently a vibration and if i put the jeep in neutral the vibration is much less. also for a while I've noticed what i assumed was just mud tire rough ride starting from a stop may actually be related to the more pronounced shudder, i can also feel the rhythmic vibration driving slowly around 4 mph more pronounced on a slight downhill, but not as much as in reverse.
stopped by the dealership to order the transmission mount and the parts guy tells me $95 special order will take a week no refunds, i tell him no problem long as its the right part. he shows me a picture of the whole transmission rear bracket made to hang off the rear of the tranny, i ask him about the little tiny part between the mount he just showed me and the skid plate...he checks and says my mistake, the little tiny simple part is the one you want let me check the price. OK that will be $140 with tax. So... $140 for a piece of rubber and steel sandwich or $95 bucks for the complicated steel bracket, think Chrysler is gouging us for the parts we need (perhaps they are soon in short supply)? Anyway still love my jeep, but Chrysler as a company deserves no loyalty.
rant aside, seems like the shudder, noisy vibration at stop lights and low speed rhythmic vibration are related to the mount although if i try moving the transmission by hand pushing on it and the drive shafts everything feels solid. any thoughts? i should have the new transmission mount tomorrow.
