Transfer case pops out of 4WD anytime I down shift or accelerate

I was driving to work this morning, (and with the snow and people slipping and sliding,) I was in 4wd high but every time I would down shirt or decelerate, the transfer case would pop out of gear. Help!

Sounds like a linkage issue preventing your transfer case from being fully engaged. I've heard of this on some vehicles with body lifts. Good luck!

Wow! My first Jeep (CJ5) had that bungee cord option too. Plus a kerosene heater duct taped to the dash to work as a defroster! Miss that old girl!😢

The linkage probably isn't aligned correctly. My LJ had that issue ever since I bought it unmodified.

You can play around with the transfer case shift linkage or the IMHO easiest solution is to swap it out for a cable shifter such as the one from Savvy.

Also check the bushing that connects the drive train to the skid to make sure it's not allowing too much movement.

Sounds like an adjustment issue, also sounds like a good time to get a Savvy cable shifter and NEVER have that problem again.
So update; on my way home, the transfer case was making a lot of popping noises, then somehow ended up in neutral, and now is stuck in 4lo. I’ve lifted the front up, spun the wheels, got it into 2wd but then once I drop it on the ground and start to drive it acts like it’s still in 4 low.

What do you mean "it acts like it's in 4 low"? Is it in 4 low or not?

I would disconnect the linkage from the TC and manually put it 2 high and see how it drives. I would then put it in 4 high and 4 low and see if it stays in the selected position. That will tell you if you have a TC problem or a linkage problem.

Your transfer case linkage has just slipped out of adjustment, it's only held in adjustment with a single bolt with a 1/2" head. Loosen the bolt, slide the rod back in where the factory placed it (look for marks on the rod) and tighten the snot out of the bolt you'll see circled in red in the below photo.
