Hello Team Jeep,

I drive a 2003 Wrangler 4.0L (189K) w/ automatic transmission / 3" Teraflex lift on 15x33 wheels.

Recently, When I hop on the freeway, the transmission will shift into the lower gears. (the same effect as activating the overdrive switch). If I initiate the following procedure:
  • shift the transmission into neutral
  • turn the motor off and on (not safe at 65 mph)
  • Then shift back into drive
The transmission will return to overdrive at least for a while. Currently, I replaced the OD switch. My next step will be to replace the transmission filter and change out the oil and at the same time have them run a diagnostic. I would like to repair this myself if possible, but I also want to be prepared in case I have to leave it with a mechanic.

Thank you for being there when we need you Jeep Forum. As always, I would would appreciate any advice or suggestions.

Sounds like there may be an issue with the solenoid, or even potentially an issue with the TCM (Transmission Control Module). Have you scanned it to see if it's throwing any error codes?
